Default digital the same as BW for white weding dress?

In the days of film a white dress or shirt would have a blue cast when using a speed light.

Is that an issue for digital?

Color film came in two basic flavors, tungsten and daylight. Each brand had slightly different formulas to affect the end color results. With digital, you can choose pretty much whatever white balance you want beforehand or afterwards especially if you shoot RAW. The flashes I have, have a WB of 5600, so I could set the cameras WB to that.

I understand WB but I am talking about the effect of whiteners they add to clothing and especially whites.

A lot of white clothing (such as wedding dresses) have optical brighteners put in them to make them appear more white. When large amounts of UV (such as from unfiltered flash units), they fluoresce and appear bluish. This only affects the items with the optical brighteners, so if you "correct" for this, the rest of the scene (including skin tones) turns yellow.

It sounds as though a UV filter may indeed help this. I will check it out.

Thanks

Never heard of that, or had an issue... I usually set to the flash or strobe temp and shoot away. I'd try the UV filter idea with and without to see if you see a difference, but I'd set the WB to a specific value for both and check it with a JPG so you don't have any RAW auto-presets affecting anything..

There is a good chance you have UV filtration in your hot mirror already.

If you are shooting in camera RAW, then any color cast can be corrected.
