Lots of great entries so far - challenge ends in around 24 hours so still time for a few more .

Indeed, but for me I think you still have the best one. I'd love to know how you got that sepia tint?

Several ways of doing that, depending on your software and whether you want your whites and/or blacks to take on the tint as well. In my case, I usually convert the monochrome to RGB, if it isn't already, then adjust the midpoints of the tone curves to get the intensity and hue I want.

If you're referring to my example, the technique I use is basically to get a tone that is what I remember a lot of my old film B&W images looked like. Quite often they had a greyscale veering towards the warm side, and I still prefer this when converting to B&W (de-saturation in something like Photoshop seems too cold and close to a bluey black for my tastes).

Anyway, about 3 hours to go before final submission - so still time for anyone else to have a pop!

Well, this was a really tough one to decide on as each entry showed that there are so many different perspectives on creating a B&W image. In the end I have to pick one and I'll go for alan.lush's example.

Alan, in case you don't know the rules - you now have to start a new speed challenge topic in this section. Post an image and what rules you impose and set a time limit.

Aha! I saw this earlier and thought 'has alan changed his name?' . No worries Alan (scoundrel172 - if the other Alan doesn't turn up to start the challenge in the next day or so then I'll definitely go for yours. It was an interesting and difficult challange you set - I'm sure we'll see it again soon.

Ok, thanks Paul. I have to say I didn't expect to win; there were so many other good entries.

I spent the weekend away in the Lake district playing with my new Xpan, so apologies to everyone for the tardy response to this.

I will think on a new challenge and hopefully post one later today (UK time).

Al.
