Default Ratio: keepers to deleters

When you guys get back from a "shoot" whatever it might be (bird's, wildlife, weddings, scenery, etc.), How many of the photo's do you consider keepers?
It seems like my ratio is anywhere from 1:10 - 1:20. That doesn't seem very good to me.

Thanks

Chris

You're doing fine.

For sports, it varies. I get anything from 1:7 to 1:50. One day I was real hot and had something like 1:3, but I didn't take that many frames.

Wildlife and birds is also a mixed bag; there have been days I don't get anything, period. Of course, there are quite a few kinds of birds that pass through my yard when I'm at home, so it isn't always a big deal to have nothing.

For stuff like events, people (not formal portaits), and other stuff, I aim for 1:2, 1:3, but 1:5 to 1:15 is more realistic.

Sometimes its like 32:33. Other times its 1:100. It depends on the shoot. Each year I take around 10,000 shots, and I genuinely like 3-5 from that year. So I guess the ratio of keeper:junk is a lot different to what I like:everthing I keep.

I'll be happy if it's 1:50. Of those, I get one or two that are half decent.

At the end, it's all subjective, as Brian likes to say. And it is.

How is your keeper ratio subjective? Shouldn't it just be a number

OK, maybe objective. I get these mixed up.

I better find another word for that, as it always confuses me.

thanks for your input, you guy make me feel better ... The reason I asked in the first place was because I just got back from shooting some birds at a local wildlife sanctuary and out of the 100 or so shots, I only really liked about 3 or 4, so it was a little depressing.

No worry.

I still want to tell between Objective and Subjective. If for nothing, just to give Brian hard time

Birds? Don't be depressed. You have a tough subject with a low yield, and you are probably being brutally honest with yourself. Keep that mentality - study what went right, and why.
