Default Pictures people want to see

My girlfriend just spent two hours looking through pictures of naked men and women on some show-me-your-naked-pic site. These pictures were all taken by average people, sometimes of themselves, usually with just point and shoot digicams. Most of them were horrible technically.

It occurred to me then that most people don't give a rat's behind about how good your camera is or even how good your picture is! So long as it shows something people want to see, that's what makes a picture "good" to most people.

And then people on this site spend tons of time buying cameras and perfecting the art.

And then really to call yourself a "pro" all you need to do is go out and shoot porno or pictures of yourself naked and post them for money on a site, or you can go chase ambulances and take pictures of people with their limbs hanging off or blood streaming down their faces, and sell those to the newspapers, and come to the forums and call yourself a pro and justify buying a Canon 1D Mark III because you're a pro and everyone will say, look, he's a pro, he can do that.

I guess my point is taking pictures people want to see and being a pro has nothing to do with talent, sometimes.

True. People dig drama. Anything controversial or taboo will generally attract the public crowd.

That's how celebrities get attention when their popularity goes down anyway...

Anybody can be a pro at anything. Im a professional slacker when I want to be. So I guess the term "pro" is subjective.

If you make money from something, you can be considered a pro. Whether its a shot of a family portrait, or a picture where you arent quite sure, but because of the zoom and tight crop you think its of a gynocological exam, if you make a dime off it you are considered a pro.

Photographers, like any artist, cater to a specific group. Sometimes that group is large, and sometimes that group is just themselves. Thats why forums like this exist. So we can share concepts and ideas with like minded people.

And with the development (pardon the pun) of the cheap high quality digital camera, the line between pro and amateur is blurred if not totally wiped away. A new $200 p&s can take as good as if not better pictures then film slr's that were the top of the line even 10 years ago that cost $1000-2000. Back then, if you saw someone holding a giant camera, you knew they were a pro. Now that same pro carries both a digital slr and a digital p&s for emergencies. The same p&s someones 60 year old grandmother can go out and buy.

Those sites your girlfriend viewed have nothing to do with art, or photography. They are about nudity, and pornography. Don't confuse the two.

However, that goes back to the old debate of...what is art? Who has a right to decide what is art and what is not. Infact, we have some artist on this fourm that have posted photos of nudity. Why is their photos called art while others are not.

(PavelOlavich, don't get me wrong here...in a way I agree whit you...I am just offering a counter point)

I'm not suggesting that nude shots can't be art. But a site that caters to naked images probably has little to do with art, and photography.

You'll often find many nudes on this site that are considered as art, and show very good photography.

As to the definition of "art"? That's a very subjective term that could over fill it's own thread.
