I have already gone mirrorless with my Canon M3 but not full-frame, partly because there were complaints about the noise my dSLR made, and partly because my Canon 40D has a full seven years of rather heavy usage on it and the shutter release is becoming temperamental. The M3 isn't quite as quiet as I would like because the focal plane shutter still makes noise, but there is no longer any mirror slap. The selection if M mount glass is not great, but I don't care beause I have an adapter that allows me to use my existing lenses without a problem. Because of the M3's much shorter flange distance, I could use either old Canon or Nikon lenses with it if I wanted to. Because my subjects are normally not especially fast-moving, I don't need the fast rep rates of some of the newer cameras and can tolerate the slower autofocus of a mirrorless camera. One of the things I do like is the more accurate autofocus on the M3, though it is slower than my old camera. Although my Canon M3 did not come with an EVF, I got one as an (extra-cost) option that fits into the accessory shoe. The resolution on both the main LCD and the EVF is better than any other electronic viewer I have, whether EVF or main LCD, and allows for a real-time magnified view if necessary. I don't know of any through-the-lens optical viewfinder that offers that feature. I haven't tried fitting an external flash or transmitter to this camera yet, which is about all I would otherwise use the accessory shoe for anyway. The camera body itself has an electronic level in it, so I wouldn't need to mount a spirit level on the shoe. As far as battery life goes, I usually buy and carry a spare battery regardless of the effective life, so anything beyond a day's shooting is gravy.

Just read your linked news. Not really news,
cuz it's been obvious for some time, but the
article is brief and to the point. From your
"if and when" remark, I assume you see it
as news. The only realistic view is to drop
the "if" and stick with "when"

OTOH, the endless string of toadall idiots and
'internet experts' in the "discussion" following
the article is at once amusing and disgusting.
Couldn't find one participant not on the board
of directors of Shidt For Brains, Inc :-(

------------------------------------------

Included in the so called "discussion" is the
requisite amount of Sony gripes. I use Sonys
but keep my fiscal exposure to Sony minimal
cuz, even as a reasonably happy user, I just
don't, can't, won't trust Sony. But SLRs are
dead. Been using them since their primitive
days, for their special abilities. The live-view
cameras are the natural heirs of the SLR and
so for now I use Sony, but will welcome the
day that the more reliable companies finally
offer post-SLR systems.

Seams if they were smart, they would just use the FX lens line.. Many of them out there already, would make switching to a mirrorless body less painful. I wonder if there is a technical reason why a new lens line would be needed for a mirrorless camera?

The elimination of the mirror clearance requirement would make wide-angle lenses easier and cheaper to design. The elimination of the reflex mirror and its associated mechanical support and linkage would also make the camera body cheaper, quieter, and more reliable.
