Post PhotoBucket Grab

Some don't know this but PhotoBucket has been around a LONG time and has been used millions of times for hosting images, and then using them to display in other sites, like PhotoCamel. Well, they decided that they would charge people to do that, and they didn't really tell any of their users. Just did it.

So now when you have an image that you hosted at PhotoBucket, and it is shown somewhere else, you get this warning.... which kind of makes it look like the poster is the one in the wrong, which is not the case.

And yeah, sites are allowed to control and charge of these types of services, but when they just decide to do it, some tend to get a bit hot under the collar....

I think it was the $400/year fee to link on other sites that set people off. I have read that some people who have paid the fee still cannot get to their photos. The help page on Photobucket's website is a dead link too as of a few days ago. I deleted most of my photos I've had there for a decade a couple months ago. The ads were too invasive for me. Deleted my account last week.

$400 a year? Cheaper to host on your own domain. MUCH cheaper.

I've also been using pBase for some projects, but there are many other alternatives. SmugMug comes to mind, as well.

Not a big deal or a big loss to me. Photobucket always was a second rate site. Slow, poor interface. I agree that Smugmug is a much better site. Flickr is even better than Photobucket.

Yeah, their biggest advantage was free, long time ago. They been around a looonngg time, and a lot of people used them back then and continued. But yeah, they grab the reigns and pretty much mucked everything up and demanded a huge sum of money.... all because they weren't making money. Well duh. Should have charged people $24 a yeah maybe 5 years ago and you'd be richer than you will be in 3 months waiting for $400/yr.

But that is just me.

But we do have a lot of broken images.... well, not broken. The original now show that one above.

Sounds like they are forcing a lot of people to kick the (photo)bucket (habit).

I received an e-mail from Photobucket on 6th of July asking me to upgrade. But nothing was written about the consequences of not upgrading. Only when I clicked the upgrade button I saw the details of the new subscription plan. Unfortunately, after using Photobucket for nearly 10 years I had to cancel by Plus-subscription as I have no wish to pay $399.99 annually to host my images. From now I shall post images directly to Photocamel. I don't post in any other forum any longer, thus there is no need for me to have a subscription to Photobucket.

Well, no need and certainly not for $400/year.
