Who are your photographic mentors or photographic role models?

This may have been done before, but I'm curious anyway. I get this question all the time when I do photography field seminars or expeditions. I'd like to hear who you look up to in the photographic world, living or dead, and why.

To start things off, I would like to offer a few of my own:

Creatively, I've been inspired by Ansel Adams (for overall approach and previsualization methods), Ernst Haas (for use of color and composition), Eliot Porter (for use of color, design of composition and exploration of camera angle). There are a few others.

For strenght of spirit, productivity and industiousness, William Henry Jackson.

For my photographic "philosophy", my Father (a talented amateur photographer), my Mother (a lover of nature and the outdoors), my wife Eva (for the love of life and the will to explore it).

Whoever takes an image which or shows an enthusiasm that inspires me to get my camera out of the case...... There have been too many to count.

Most recently, my 12 year old Stepson.

(cheezy but true.)

Creatively, there are many. William Eggleston is the first to come to mind. Mostly for his use of color and his quirky illustration of everyday things.

For strength of spirit, productivity and industriousness. Irving Penn and Alexi Bodovitch. Their early work with Harpers Bazzar pushed the boundaries of creativity in photography and art direction.

For my photographic "philosophy" I would say George Hurrell and Richard Avedon. Those guys could make anyone look glamorous.

Hmmmm...William Henry Jackson! I picked up a book at the library on his life and work and was very impressed. Seems like when I think "thats too high to climb or too far to walk...he comes to mind. I think I'll go find that book again and reread it.

My late father who had done numbers of advertising jobs in the 80's and 90's for local agencies like Pearl & Dean, Saatchi & Saatchi, Ogilvy & Mather, Dentsu Young & Rubicam, etc. I adore his lighting and work. He is my inspiration in photography.
