He wasn't thrilled to be modeling for me, but he got a treat so all is right in his world. I may try again when he's a little more enthusiastic.

Close. When you ask my dog to sit, he melts into "rub my belly" position. I had set up the lighting in advance and asked my wife to help me get him into, and keep the position. He was off the mark a little, I was having trouble focusing in the low light, and he was hanging his head like "I'm doing this because you're making me, but I don't really want to do it."

So, what would I change? Get him to sit and have a look of attention and a little excitement (so, have my assistant tempt him with a treat). Move him or the back light to better rim the ears. Not cut the tip off one ear. Lower the key light, move it just a little more centered, and make sure I get catchlights in the eyes.

Thanks for the info on how you took the image. Yes I too find treats seem to work well with pets.
I liked the rim light too.The only thing I thought was missing was the catchlight as you say. I think it would have lifted the image for sure.

Love the strong focus on his eyes and the faint halo lighting around his head. Good start if you ask me!
