Leet is nothing new. I was doing some proto-leet things back in 1979, though the idea wasn't necessarily to encrypt messages so that the uninitiated could read them. It was more a question of getting around the limits of short variable names. I often named the routine for the creation of a data structure CRE8. Its opposite for getting rid of them when no longer needed, was (of cuorse ) NIL8.
