Default Closing of State Parks to save $

California is proposing to close as many as 220 State Parks in order to save money.

Here is the info, as well as links to the lists of parks to stay open (a lot shorter than the closed list) and of course, the list of parks to be closed.

A photograph is like a joke. If you have to explain it, it just isn't that good.

You know, this sucks. California probably has the best state park system in the country.

Texas has a great system too and I would absolutely hate it if this happened here. They are struggling as it is, but have yet to resort to these drastic measures.

It DOES suck Rick. And the other problem is that it's not going to save that much money.
Most of the parks are self sufficient in the fact that they charge for entry fees and such.

Mt. Diablo (which I can see as I pull out of my driveway) is on the list to be closed.
One of the problems here is, people hike up Mt. Diablo all the time.
Now if someone gets hurt while hiking, how long before a ranger can get there to help?
Since the park is closed to the public, will it be considered tresspassing?

If it works like it did around here, the park were close, but all of the Rangers continued their jobs. (no layoffs) Where was the savings.

edit: They also lost revenue from sales of things in the parks along with their pass and entrance money.

I wonder what rights people who have purchased annual park passes might have?

California and Florida are so close to going broke that its scary. Im sure other states are near as bad off too. Poor Arnold. That state was almost belly up when he got in there. Things havent gotten any easier with the economy going down the toilet the last couple years.

F**k Arnold!
He made promises and ran a special election (spending bills) to try to implement them when he first got in office, he lost the election to union sponsored adds that every school, police department and fire department would close if the state implemented fiscal responsibility.
So he then gave up and has been spending like a drunken Kennedy for the last 6 years!

Wow.... Has it really been 6 years? Damn.... Didnt know how his politics have been since he was elected (hmmm Arnold or a porn star). I just know that the state being almost bankrupt was a big part of the previous guy being kicked out.

Unfortunately, she dropped out of the race just before the voting.
In fact, a LOT of the candidates dropped out of the race before the actual election day.

She was going to get rid of the car tax, and start a breast implant tax.
She also claimed that she was going to make sure that everyone on unemployment served on Jury Duty (a hell of an idea).
