Now, understand, that I'm not very much into the technical aspect of anything related to photography. I think the main difference now is that the DLSR's do have crop bodies so less cropping is done than with a full frame. The crop already brings you in closer. The 5DII cost more, you'd be able to print fine with either of them. I love my 5DII, I don't use it for sports except when it's night at the football field because my little XTi can't handle higher ISO that is required.

A monopod might suit you well for any of the shooting that you describe and would take the weight of an f/2.8. That's another thing that is on my wishlist, a monopod that Michael recommended.

I was about to say what Lori just mentioned, that a monopod will help with the weight.

I have both the 70-200 f4 and f2.8 IS, and the weight difference is huge. So I understand your concern. However, I prefer to shoot sports without a monopod as I find it a bit restricting in terms of movement to follow the action. But please keep in mind I only shoot horse jumping events, so it might be different for different sports. Michael will be the guy to who can shed some light on the matter as he shoot sports professionally / semi-professionally.

What I do with weight (the 70-200 f2.8 IS or the 100-400) is use a strap around the neck while supporting the camera & lens with the left hand. This way the weight is distributed between the neck and hand (50/50 perhaps). I can go for hours like that with no problem.

My pics for this week:

Thursday November 12th

Chicago @ San Francisco - It's bounce-back time for Chicago.

Sunday November 15th
Detroit @ Minnesota - If the Lions played football all 4 quarters, they may have a chance at winning another game this year. But it's not gonna happen this week.
Denver @ Washington -
Cincinnati @ Pittsburgh - Redemption for the Steelers
Atlanta @ Carolina -
Tampa Bay @ Miami - The Bucs are just bad right now.
New Orleans @ St Louis - This is going to be a joke of a game.
Jacksonville @ New York Jets - Jets win at home coming off the bye.
Buffalo @ Tennessee - 3 in a row for Vince Young!
Kansas City @ Oakland - KC has some injuries, released Larry Johnson. Oakland should be well rested coming off the bye.
Dallas @ Green Bay - Roy Williams may throw a fit if Miles Austen gets more catches and yards than him. LOL
Seattle @ Arizona - Cardinal offense looks like it's rolling pretty well now.
Philadelphia @ San Diego - Will Michael Vick get to play? Hmm.......
New England @ Indianapolis - I hate the Patriots and I think Peyton Manning is going to pick that defense apart.

Monday November 16th
Baltimore @ Cleveland - Brady Quinn is back and bad as ever. Sad thing is, he's better than the other guy...

Hey db83, you didn't actually make the selection for KC vs Oakland. Hurry and do so before you won't be allowed to edit the post.

I have ordered the Manfrotto 488RC4 Midi Ball Head and the Manfrotto 681B Professional Aluminum Monopod. This setup should be okay as the runners will be more or less on level ground. Other than my wife's running, the H.S. kids playing baseball and soccer will be an occasional past time. Mostly I will not be shooting fast action.

I guess it does not matter which camera I purchase, as both will produce quality images. However, if I am shooting portraits indoors then maybe the 5DMKII with a 100mm f/2.8L would be better then the 7D with the same lens? But if it is only fractionally better then it would not be cost effective to buy the 5DMKII. It is very hard to separate wants and needs but factor in the cost and it gets a little easier.

I was deciding between those two cameras as well.
1. 5d Mark II is $1000 more than the 7D - big factor for me why I will be going with the 7D.
2. 7D has a more advanced AF system. Even though there are complaints on forums, I think a lot of those are just people not used to the new AF system and don't know how to use it just yet.
3. I like taking action shots of my dogs and at the zoo, so the extra fps and the extra reach on the 7D is beneficial to me. I'm willing to sacrifice a little bit on the low light IQ for the higher fps. According to reviews, 7D is still pretty good in low light, but of course, not as good as a FF.

In the future, when I will want a FF body to complement the 7D, I will probably get a later version of the 5D Mark II.

db83: So you are happy with the 7D? Then will you in the future move up to a FF?
