This may not work in the USA...

Go to Ikea - they have very nice free paper tape measures dotted around the furniture, kitchen, bathroom areas, 1 meter in length with Imperial on one side and metric on the other. They are used for customers to measure up appliances. very handy, light and you can fold them up if necessary for storage. The also have very good short pencils - ideal for taking notes.
