Just want to shoot a portrait with both formats and a camera or two to compare the results. If we have access to different film stock, then compare those too.

I do not enjoy printing or processing color film, but I love black and white.
Agree 100%!

I spent many years in the darkroom and had great times teaching my kids the basics of photography there, too!

I actually enjoy Color RA-4 printing.
It is not much harder than B&W.

Well, to answer the OP, B&W traditionally came in 25 and 100 sheet packs. Then Kodak decided to only sell in 50 sheet packs and some others followed along. A long time ago, there were other choices like 10 and 500 sheets but that was like in the 1950's, 60's, and 70's.

Color film seems to come in 10 or 20 sheet packs these days, the cheapest 4x5 coming out to about $3.00 a sheet. Too rich for my SS check.

So, nope, you are not likely to find 10 sheet packs of 8x10 B&W film.

Well a member here is willing to parcel off some of his 4x5 stock, but the real big expense is the 8x10 stock. Sometimes you just gotta do what ya gotta do.

It is not the processing that I mind so much, it is the printing. Black and white is much more fun.

Unfortunately, I don't have any suggestions on where to get small amounts of 8x10 B&W film, especially if neither Samy's nor Freestyle have what you're looking for. I would like to pop in for a second to express jealousy at all the fun you two are going to have though. Man, I wish I still lived in LA.

Does Simon Camera sell large format film? Might be worth a try. Simons Camera - Simon's Camera Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA

What about the Calumet? Digital cameras, lenses and photo gear at calumetphoto.com

I am pretty sure Simon's in no more. There website doesn't seem to work. Calumet has 10 sheets of KodaK for $60, so it is much more cost effective to buy the 50 sheets of Arista at Freestyle.

You can still have photographic fun in Saratoga, wherever the hell that is. LOL

That's too bad. I obviously haven't been into Simon's for quite a while, but they're close to Calumet, so I guess if you're ever in that neighborhood you could always just take a look, or just try and call them.

They always had a bunch of eclectic logo items and other miscellaneous stock that was interesting to look at, even if you didn't want to buy any of it.

One guy I worked for used them as his go-to dealer; at one point we were guessing he single-handedly kept them afloat with all the random crap he bought.

Hahaha.

I was referring to the fact that you guys actually own large format cameras to play with; I had some to use when I was in school in LA, but now that I've moved back and this photography thing is even more of a business right now (ironically, I worked much more when I was a student), so the expense of adding *anything* is a tough sell right now.
