Some recent mixed bug macros from the garden.

Narcissus fly hoverfly meredon equestris



Small hoverfly about 7mm body length - possibly Heringia heringi



Large Ichneumon wasp - Amblyteles sp.



Small orbweb spider Araniella cucurbitina



Shieldbug -5th instar Pentatoma rufipes (so I've been told)



Mating azure damselflies

Wonderful series! Just curious, where do you find the names of these guys? I have bird books and fish books I guess there are equivalent for the insect world.

Gilfish - I do have some bug books but often use some bug web sites to help ID them- you do of course begin to recognise them after a while. For example I often use Wildlife and Environment Forums but obviously it's for UK stuff.
There are also some specialist sites around eg Diptera.info - News for flies and HymIS (Hymenoptera Information System) • Index page for wasps

Thanks for the links. The credentials of people on the HymIS site are impeccable. I will have to look for some books next time I am in Borders.
