Good detail and colour. A bit of fill light on the left would really help this image.

#2 is better but I was thinking more in the line of the attached copy. Still I would prefer some more light under the bill and throat of the bird.

If you use Photoshop CSx that has the Shadow/Highlight tool, it is a simple task to open the shadows provided they are not completely under exposed.

Without the Shadow/Highlight tool, a gradient mask can be used on a layer that has the shadows opened with the Level or Curves tools.
