More precisely, a thistle. Colorful blooms if a bit spiky and unfriendly-looking. And I prefer the first image, which better shows off the overall shape and structure of the flower. Unless I am mistaken, the top image also depicts a more mature specimen.

That's some cool looking thistle. They make fine subjects for abstracts too. I like the first one the best.
