here highlights are blown and nothing can be done to recover details from
the highlights. when we shoot we make sure not to let the highlights
blow and for this highlights alert function button of the camera can
help. if highlights blink then we underexpose till highlights stop blinking,
even if picture might appear dark on camera lcd but what you have to
pay attention to is histogram. details in shadows can easily be
recoved at the time of processing. so in digital you have
to respect santity of highlights.

Nice capture but is rather spoilt by the blown whites

One of my favorite BFlies! As mentioned, highlights are blown out. Shooting in manual mode gives you a lot of room for making adjustments (shutter speed, etc.) especially if shooting in the middle of the day with sun out.

LRJr... thanks for the advice. I was shooting in manual and playing around. Unfortunately this capture wasn't with the best of settings! You win some and you lose some. God Bless all... again thanks for the critiques!

Butterfly revisited... the highlights of the flower are blown in some areas but not as bad as the original post shows... any better?
