Default Soft Box vs. Octabox

Can someone please explain to me the different applications or uses for softboxes versus octaboxes? Thanks.

softboxes are square/rectangular octoboxes are octaginal.

In a given diagonal, the Octo, due to it's shape, has a larger surface area.

Really not much more difference then that.

So, no reason to use one over the other?

yes and no.

If you are doing a set-up where you need more control, then a square box may be easier to flag.

You may like the look of a Octo catchlight instead of a square catch.

This is one of those questions that comes down to personal prefence...or more importantly what you have on hand.

And if you are shooting objects or products with any amount of shine or smoothness to their surfaces, you want the linear specular reflection that a softbox provides, not an odd shaped octogon or star shaped umbrella reflection.
