Default 580EX II wireless freeze motion...

I will be doing a hairstyling shoot in a couple of weeks. The client wants the model to flick wet hair to create a shower of droplets that need to be very clearly defined. The tests I've done so far indicate that I will need a minimum of 1/5000 sec shutter.

I shoot on an 1DS MkII and the Elinchrom monos I normally use in the studio are way too slow but I have successfully managed to do the test shots with a 580EX II in the hotshoe set for High-speed Sync. However I will also be needing back and key light.

My question is, if I can get my hands on a couple more 580EX II's will all three fire wirelessly on High-speed sync at 1/5000 or 1/8000? If not what's the maximum shutter speed I might expect with a multiple wireless 580EX II set up?

If anyone has some hands-on experience of this type of freeze motion set up with 580EX II's i'd be very grateful for a confirmation on the practicalities of this solution.

many thanks

well my suggestion if your going to spend money on the 580's you should rent a hass or equalvant that had a leaf shutter that syncs at any speed..

but with a leaf shutter you can sync at any speed and you can get that 5000th of sec that you want for the most part..

You don't need 1/5000 to freeze the droplets with a flash. I think max sync is 1/250 sec. However, the flash duration will be more like 1/10,000 sec. The flash will freeze the action as long as that is your primary light source.

I agree with Jfrancho on the shutter speed, use your three flashes on low power and it shoud stop the motion no problem. You can stop a humming birds wings with one flash.I shoot nikon and not up on the 580ex, maybe some one can add to that part.

Its for the original 580, but I imagine the numbers are comparable. Specs say 0.2 ms or less.

Try and get a rim light and that will help define the droplets, to one side and behind a little
