Default Question before purchase

I am hopefully going to be ordering some light eqiupment in the next week or so. I have read up on alot of things and compiled a list to buy. Could someone with experience look it over and tell me if I am missing something?

1 old vivatar flash I own
1 430ex flash
2 stands
2 umbrella brackets w/ hotshoe adapter
2 silver umbrellas
ebay wireless trigger and 2 recievers

By the way I am using a Rebel XT.

Thanks for any and all input.

If you are going to be using the flashes wirelessly, you don't need to go with the Canon Ex flash. You will lose all the eTTL functions. You may do better with another flash that is more powerful/less cost. But if you plan to sometimes use it on the camera or with a Canon offshoe cord, then go ahead with the EX.

As for umbrellas, I'd mix in a white umbrella with black backing instead of two silver. Maybe even two white umbrellas to start. I rarely ever use my silver umbrellas.

Have you seen the "strobist packages" at MPEX? Check them out.

Thanks alot for the replies. I had not looked at the packages at MPEX but have now. That is a lot simpler route for me and better in a couple regards. I was intending on using the 430ex on camera as well. I guess that will wait for now. I picked out the sw1 and so1 kits at MPEX. I think they will give me more bang for the buck right now. I just have to wait till the funds beome available and then the fun will begin.

There is always debate as to what is cheaper in the long run. I can't see how you can go wrong with these packages to learn lighting and add to the armamentarium as you go. Congrats and let's see some of the results.

I just received the Mpex.com 'SO2' kit. I ordered it because, at the time last week
when I ordered, the Vivitar 285HV flash was out of stock. I plan to buy one from
B&H tomorrow when I get paid tomorrow It will be fired with a Canon 420EX on-camera.

Based on what I read, it'll be a good low-cost opening the world of light
Also I suggest you call Mpex when you order. Some stuff I heard on other forums
has shown that sometimes when you order online it can take some time to process...
Since this was my first purchase and I had a few Q's I called. Spent 20mins talking
to them about what I wanted, where I wanted to go in the end, what I had right now, etc.
Extremely helpful Just my 2 PS check out Strobist
