thanks for all the replies guys
Yes a custom WB certainly is something I should have done. In a previous thread someone mentioned a colour cast which led me to trying a few things out in Lr.

I've got a grey card and know I should be using it more often!!

Thanks again
Jim

Question is...What kind of light modifiers are you using...if any? Shoot thru a silver umbrella..its different than white...shoot through a softbox...every one is different....using a beauty dish...I won't even go there. Every time I set up my studio I shoot a Gretag Macbeth color checker card. Gretag Macbeth - Color Checker for Digital Photography Color Management It takes all the guesswork out of color correction.

thanks Preston. Elinchrom 400BX heads x2 main with softbox, fill light with a shoot through white umberella. All shots in Manual same settings..... That's why I questioned the WB in lightroom.

My As Shot looked slightly warm, but using the flash WB of 5500 temp made them look VERY warm?!

Anyway I will from now on use my grey card.#

thanks again
JD

was his shirt white or was it some other color? If it was white, can't you key off the shirt? (not that I advocate a shoot with white and black so close to each other.)

The shirt was lilac I think. Certainly not white

EOS_JD.... it looks like you need an Expodisc for setting a custom WB... they work great! However, you might want to try a white coffee filter first as they work pretty well also. I used the white coffee filter before getting an Expodisc. Good luck! Bill P.

Hi Bill
In a studio the light doesn't really change too often so I thought an expodisdk is overkill. I have a greycard that will allow me to set it and forget.

THe expodisk however would be great for shooting in changing light (which I do quite a lot - which is the main reason I thought about it)....

Money money money money Maybe once I start earning fropm doing some portraits

EOS_JD....
Yep, the Expodisc is expensive, but I now think it really was worth it. I have some wrestling photos posted on the Sports site here on the Camel and I set my WB for the arena and the images are just the right color. BTW, I shot those using ISO 1000 and the custom WB and the photos I posted are not corrected at all.... straight out of a D300/70-200/2.8 VR Nikkor. I really am crazy about the Expodisc.

Plus, since I use hot lights I can change my custom WB to suit the light set up I am using.
Happy Shooting! Bill P.
