Default Purchasing PWs......Cords?

Getting some PWs soon. Need some help

I'm pretty aware that cords for the 580exII are packaged with the box.

But I need PC cords for
- an attachment to the camera (5d and 40D) to the PW
- an attachment for my 430ex (hot shoe adapter maybe) to the PW
- and strobes (1/4 and 1/2 sockets....I think) to the PW

I need to buy from a place that is reliable and not that expensive.
I have no idea what to type in to search for these cords.
Any help on what I need and where I need to go would be greatly appreciated.

Yup.

The problem is I can find the hot shoe flash for it and the cords for the bigger sockets (or adapters).

I'm assuming now that the cords for the camera's are easy enough but I'm lost with everything else.

Plus are these cords supposed to be so expensive?

I'm sure they are. Pocketwizard stuff is expensive. Sometimes you can find simple flash cords such as a 1/8 to 1/4 mono jack cord at Radio Shack for less.

try this. I found him on another camera forum. He's very helpful if you have questions and has a decent price for his products:

FlashZebra.com: Products

btw, I have no relation with the company.

You shouldn't need a cord to attach the Pocket Wizard to the camera, it usually goes in the camera's hotshoe. But if you want to use a flash in the hot shoe then you would need a standard PC to (sub?) mini phone plug cable. The PC connector attaches to the side of the camera and the mini phone plug attaches to the PW's camera connector. Item # 0040 on the above site should do that.

You would need a special (expensive) cable though, if you wanted to fire the camera remotely via the PWs.

I've never tried using a PW with a camera flash (430, 550, 580), so not sure what you would need there. I would think that a mini to hotshoe (#0038 on the site referenced above) would work for that.

For strobes, you need the mini phone plug on the cable for connecting to the PW and then whatever your strobe needs for its connection at the other end. That could be a 1/4" phone plug, a household (HH) type connector, mini phone plug, etc.

I've made most of my PW to Strobe cables myself. Start out with basic Radio Shack short cords and either cut/solder as needed or use adapters. My standard has a 1/4" phone plug to mini phone plug. The mini connects to the PW. The 1/4 phone goes to most of my flash heads. For my powerpacks I just have a 1/4 phone female to HH cable that I add. For the ring light I have a small 1/4 phone female to male mini adapter.
