Default LED color balance

How do adjustable brightness LED lights affect the color balance as they are dimmed? Dimming old fashion tungsten bulbs has a considerable effect. I see panels made for photo advertised as adjustable color balance. Do these accomplish this by mixing two color LED's so the brightness and color vary together or can you change either color or brightness without changing the other.

This kind of technology is fairly new, so there aren't that many people who have experience with it. My guess is that an individual LED's color balance would not change much if any if the current through it - LEDs are current-powered devices - was changed. Adjustable color balance devices would most likely have more than one kind of LED in them and the color change would be effected by changing the ratios of the excitation currents through the different kinds of LEDs.

There are a couple ways they do this. Separate LEDs for each color temp (say 3200 and 6500) as you mentioned. As you blend the two colors, there will be an increase of lumens. So in my example, a color temp of 4850 would be the brightest output. RGB LEDS where each LED has three color elements inside have a wider color range but would be tough to nail down what the lumen output would be for any of the million color combinations possible.
Hope this helps.
