Default AlienBees set up for glamour photography?

I am stuck on what I need to start off with for Gamour and Nude photography strobes. I want to get the AB's since I get a 10% student discount.

1) 1 AB800 and AB1600
or
2) 3 AB800
or
3) 2 AB800 and 1 AB1600

I figured a Key light, Fill light, and hair light to start off with.

Then do you know were to get a good deal on stands, softboxes with out breaking the bank. I was trying to get everything for 1,000 or under.

Nude photography sounds so exciting, but very few women actually want to be photographed that way (especially since you are a man) and if you think you have problems making clothed women look good, wait until they are nude. Clothes hide all of those "little" things women hate like stretch marks, bulges, rolls of fat, birthmarks, scars, differently sized breasts, moles, wrinkles and a host of other things. Not to mention, if you are a typical red blooded male who has a nude female looking seductively at you, I hope you can resist the temptation to "sample the wares" (not to mention the bulge you may have of your own!)

Yeah, plus if you do nude photography, you have to be careful that this doesn't happen to you, or else the girls won't be able to keep a straight face:

Thanks Benji,
I have done 3 nude shoots so far. 1 adult porn star, and two others local models. I used someone else gear. 1 AB setup and the other two were speedtron set up. I used my pocketwizrd for sync.

I have always been a gentelman, and respect all models.

I just want to get my own lighting equipment. I want to do some outdoors stuff along my pool and jacuzzi, and indoor stuff. So I am stuck on what to start off with. I think I will go with two AB 800 first and then add on. Get two soft boxes from photoflex.

Any other ideas.

Since you have some experience with Speedotron (Black Line ? ) equipment, why do you want to get Alien Bees ?

Why not get 1 B800 and 2 B400 units? Then with the savings get some other gear like the grid set AB has, a good, large softbox (need more money) and some good stands.

I had a B400 which I sold to a friend. The single B800 I have works very well and forces me to be creative to get the lighting I desire. As you have a goal and desire, I would suggest 3 lights and accessories. The B800 would be your main light and the B400 units would be for fill, background, etc.

Just a thought.

Brooks,

Price is a factor. The Speedotron system s much more then ABs. Heads, plus power pack, adds up. 2 heads and a power pack is $1,000 have not even got the stands or softboxes yet. At least $1500 to $2000 for a two head system.

I agree. One 800, 2 400s and some grids Beauty dish perhaps) should be able to get you started.

Well that sounds like a start 1-AB800 and 2-AB400, Light stands, large softbox from photoflex, medium softbox, grids. That might work out well.

I looked into speedtron, and just a over my budget, although they are nice.

For glamour work 3 lights is nice, two at the back and on up front.

For nudes you may only need 1.

As for power, unless you plan on shooting at f 11 then the ab1600 maybe over what you need. You can dial them down but then you get colour shifts.

I would go for 1 ab 400, 2 ab 800 and put the rest towards softboxes etc. since the modifiers you use are more important then the lights.
