Default Holy Fire, CA

Holy Fire as seen from Fullerton CA a couple days ago. Six floors up in an office building.

From ABC: "The smoke from the California wildfires has not only been impacting the West Coast. Incredibly enough, it has reached New York City -- 3,000 miles away."

Thanks, indeed it was though the ones in Northern CA were worse!

Yes. I went to the Sierra Nevada foothills near Angels Camp and the smoke showed up there each morning and cleared out by the afternoons, but I don't know why the smoke gathered and dissipated daily like that. I would guess that Angels Camp was at least 100 miles (150 km) from the nearest large fire. The smoke also messed up the air quality across the width of the Central Valley all the way to the Altamont Pass, through which I-580 runs.

Correction: It turns out that I was fairly close to the Donnell fire, which was in the Stanislaus National Forest a bit north and east of us and about 50 miles north of the Ferguson fire near Yosemite. My route also passed about 30 miles south of the Alhambra fire, but neither the Donnell nor the Alhambra fires were part of the CAL Fire system.

I saw a satellite view somewhere recently that showed the entire NW covered in smoke.

I wouldn't be surprised. If what I have been seeing on the local news about those fires depicts reality, those fires are really nasty! Then again, a lot of people were left homeless by last year's fires too.
