Who can tell me how to drop in a pre-made action into photoshop and where it should go?

You have to load it. Click the little right pointing triangle in a circle at the top right of the actions palette and pick 'load actions...'; then you pick it from the directory.

Just remember if you put your actions in the Photoshop directory. When you transition from one computer to another or you backup or whatever, you may forget you put them there, and you run a higher risk of losing them.

If you put them somewhere else, you still load them from there, so having them imbedded in the programs directory isn't required.

Yup - you can put them anywhere, load them and even (not recommended of course!) delete them from where you put them and they will still be in Photoshop!

There is a 293 page manual here about actions if you want www.paulhodson.f2s.com/Manual.doc

Danny Raphael is a great person to learn from. I haven't read this yet but I can already recommend it. This man truly loves the art of retouching and restoration... I've learned a lot from his participation at RetouchPro.com.

Thanks for the link Paul... it's been quite a while since I've been to that site.
