Default Dhow at Bander Khyran

Hi all,

Took a trip to Oman last week for my brother's wedding, didn't get chance to do much sight seeing, but did manage to get this shot of wrecked dhow at Bander Khyran.

Looking forward to going back again!

Hope you like it as much as i do!

Have always wanted to go to Oman to see the birds and wildlife.

I'm sure the HDR process has enhanced the rock texture and I like your composition and the letterbox frame.

Once photography enters your bloodstream, it is like a disease.

Software: Too numerous to list but my most used utility is ShiftN for perspective correction

Gear: Canon G12, no tripod, no lenses, no flash, no remote, no cases or bags!

Hi Martin, thanks for your comment, i was primarily there for my brothers wedding so only had a couple of days to look around, but it is stunning and can't wait to go back again. My skills with HDR aren't quite up to scratch but i think i'm getting closer. This was a five exposure set merged in Photoshop.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul, remember that Photoshop (and Lightroom CC / 6) only merge the images. They do no tonemapping. Tonemapping software reveals more detail in over and under exposed parts of your image set.

Thank you, i'll look into tonemapping software, maybe that is why mine never come out as well as i would like!

Do you have a preferred piece of software?

Cheers,

Paul, I have 4 tonemappers:
nik Efex HDR Pro 2 - old, rarely used
Photomatix ver 5
easy HDR 3.6 Home
SNS-HDR Home.

My favourite is SNS-HDR 1.4 because of the very natural colours it produces. There is a 1.x beta test version which is much faster and colour rendering is even better! (But there is no version for the Mac as yet.)

easyHDR 3.6 is a close second choice. Not as fast as SNS but it has very good image alignment and ghost removal. Generates natural colours. Lots of choices to be made during processing which slows things down.

Photomatix 5
is the industry leader. It's fast and has 2 excellent methods of removing ghosts. But I find it tends to over-saturate the results and you have to "work at it" to make truly natural images without the Photomatix "glow". Many choices, sliders and adjustments, hence a steeper learning curve than the other tonemappers.

Prices:
  • SNS-HDR Home ver 1.4 - 30 ($34) but a 30% discount for Photocamel subscribers. Version 1.x is free if you have version 1.4 (Download URL here.)
  • easyHDR Home 3.6 - 29 ($33)
  • Photomatix 5 - $99
All have free trial versions.
