Neither bannisters nor a balustrade is really intended for sitting on, but children sometimes still do it and slide to the bottom. I don't really believe it to be part of a railing, but will instead guess that this is instead a lamp, most likely a table lamp but it could also be a floor lamp.

Lighting was the key. I finally noticed that the light in all the images originated directly along the axis of symmetry of the wooden piece, leading me to the conclusion that perhaps this was not coincidence and the light was in fact mounted on the end of the stick, a guess which turned out to be correct.

GTCU #1961 is now up and running.
