Unhappy Help needed in sorting Images out in sequence

I had done a Wedding shoot last week. I am still coming to terms in stream lining a good workflow to minimise my time spend on the PC getting suqare eyes.
All my Photo images where in the correct order when transfered from my camera.
I did a number of them with post work plus others with artisic enhancemnts.
I wanted to get rid of the old name info on each image and replace it with a sequencial numbering to alow my Client to pick the Image by number.
I renamed all my Photo images to do just that and starting with a name and then the number one. That all went well. Then the big mess up came. For some reason unknown to me most of my Photo images where scattered all over the place and where not in the same place where they originaly where.
Sorted them out (took a good hour) and it did it again to me!
Why is this? Does anyone know? is there a simpler easier way to pop Photos in a sequence?
Thanks anyone"
Rainer

This is dependent on HOW you're viewing the photos. Windows My Pictures? Lightroom? Adobe Bridge? Another application?

Alphabetically, photo10.jpg would be before photo2.jpg, but if you renambed them to where the photos have 4 digit numbers, ie. photo0010, photo0002, etc, then photo0010 would be after photo0009 where it should be.

You didn't say how you renamed the images, but that would be my guess based on what you told us.

What Steve said.

Otherwise look into getting an image management system like Lightroom or use Adobe Bridge if you're using Photoshop. If budget is an issue, Adobe Photoshop Elements comes with Organizer which is pretty powerful for the price.

LR has a sort by Capture time that seems to me like the one to use , if it uses the EXIF data to come up with the capture time. Hence the photos would sort on that regardless of the file name and show up the order they were taken.

I actually using it that way and the pictures appear in the correct order.

I have however never renamed the file names

This is real handy when shooting with more than one body as well...assuming the clock is set the same on all cams.

Thank you" I find myself wanting to re name them by numbers more than anything else. This is because I the shots out I don't want.
Files where in correct when i did send them to my Photo developer. When i picked the Photos up they where a little mixed up. It tooke me a good two hours of my time to sort them out. i could not just hand them over as they where to my Customer who just wanted the Photos minus an Album.
I asked my Developer what has happened and what he might think has coursed the problem?
He explained that I should start off with at least two zeros in front of the first number being number 1 of course. This should look like 001 then 002
He thinks it should be fine from there on. Well" I hope so
