With the other things I'd like on the machine, the price difference between a quad 2.93 and a dual quad 2.26 is very small - only 350 Swiss Francs. What do you think the performance difference is there?

Where can I go for the benchmarks you mentioned?
It may be the best way to go - but it's also by far the most expensive way to go. The mac pro's use "server grade" Xeon CPU's, and correspondingly expensive server-grade ECC RAM - though the imac memory isn't exactly cheap either. That doesn't necessarily mean they are any faster than the "consumer grade" CPU's (particularly the i7 family), but they will have been more rigorously tested and certified for particular thermal conditions. Personally, I'd go for the cheaper and just as powerful option every time (probably with a 3 year Applecare contract bought at the end of the first year) - but then I am cheap in so many ways .

A very useful site for info on CPU differences and performance is Anandtech. Here's an interesting article about the procs in the mac pro AnandTech: Upgrading and Analyzing Apple's Nehalem Mac Pro

A current discussion about the relative merits of the new imacs compared to the mac pro: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=805977
May be of interest for Athena.

My Mac Pro is ordered Paul. It was a bit of an pain (not just the expense!), as I had to do it in French, and you know how much I love THAT.
