Default Transfer all my stuff to a new notebook?

What's the best way to do this? I want to retain my files, settings, etc.? Do I have to reinstall everything? Going to a new notebook soon. My current one is junk. Can I take the hard drive and just stick it in the new machine?

I'd say the hard drive swap might be done, but is the new one bigger? I'd leave the new notebook as is if it were me.

I'd backup all the data files (pictures, My Docs, etc.) and reinstall the big programs. Part of why your old one is junk could be a lot of extra junk laying around in there. If you copy everything, and reinstall on the new one, and then wipe the old one, it will probably be 10-20% faster than it is now.

I transferred my system harddrive to a new harddrive using Norton Ghost. Worked great.

The advantage of reinstalling Windows and the programs is that you start with a clean reg file. In that case, simply copy data files from one computer to the other. You could network them together and easily transfer the files, or use an interim external drive.

I'd do Ghost before I'd rip the case open on the new one and swap drives

Careful, cloning the HD from one system to the next.... the chipsets might be different and you will be transferring the chipset info from another system which willcause problems, just one of the issues with cloning. However, cloning one HD to another on the same system should be no porblem at all, I have done several this way. Generally, and it is a "pain", is to start with a fresh system install on the new computer, install the programs and use a backup of all data to restore onto the new system.

Are you running XP? There is a settings transfer function built in.

What are you trying to retain? Your installed applications?
