Hold off to the last possible minute. My next machine most likely will come with Vista installed. I can live with that. However, I don't think I'll move my current machines over to it.

You can run with that notion only so long...

The real threat today is spyware, adware, and other types of "malware" that fall outside the traditional "virus" category. I've seen machines completely overrun with the stuff, to the point of no longer being usable. These were not machines of "stupid" people.

Well I have been running with that notion for well over 25 years and it works much better for me than for anyone who did install anti-virus and still got a virus.

Spyware, adware and malware of many stripes never show up on my machine. It is real simple, just show some intelligence when you surf the Internet and only download from reputable sources. And don't download email attachments.

If you did see machines completely overrun by malware then they are the machines of stupid people. Malware ONLY occurs when YOU click on the wrong thing. If you click on the wrong thing then you obviously don't know as much as you think you do.

Gee, thanks. Now it'll be much easier for me to distinguish stupid people from the rest...

Nothing is 100% reliable, regardless of the OS, hardware, user, configuration, redundancy, whatever. There is always a combination of variables that can cause a failure and are statistically possible.

The key is planning for it.

Atomic,

Obviously you see your self as a competent computer person. I am glad you feel that way about yourself.

I would ask that you please refrain from calling everyone else on the planet that is not at the skill level you think you are "stupid".

This section of Camel is here for those that have questions about computers and to discuss topics in a mature way or ask for assistance from those that are more experienced.
This section is not for people to bash those that are less experienced.

Thank you in advanced for taking the high road.

The whole point of the User Control Account is to ADD layers of protection to the OS, almost identically to Apple's OS X model. Why would you turn it off, especially without running AV/AS software?

I have never had my computer hacked and never gotten a virus of any kind.
If someone wanted to, it could be done. It's just a matter of interest by someone with the skills. BTDT.

A multi-faceted 'layered' approach to security will give you a fighting chance, and that's about it. The moment you try to do something internet related, you're vulnerable. Period. It's a full-time job keeping the 'good' guys honest and slowing down the bad guys as much as you can, many of which are already on the trusted side of your network infrastructure.

I work with some of the 'stupidly' bright people out there who develop and maintain security policies for a living. Due to the fact that no system is 100% reliable, bad guys do exist, and work has to get done; this reality keeps CIOs and CSOs awake at night.

I did not call everyone on the planet that is not at my skill level stupid.

The stupid people are the ones who do not know how to use a computer properly but go ahead and do many stupid things like surfing to porno sites. Then when they completely screw up their computer so it will no longer run THEN they blame Microsoft for making such an insecure computer.

Anyone who is not at a high skill level should just run anti-virus software and spyware removal. Then they can do just about anything they want to their computer without hurting it.

I am sorry if I made a remark that offended anyone. It sure seems people are really touchy around here and get offended frequently. Lighten up, it's just a forum.

It is a pain in the butt and I don't need it. I've been running computers for 30 years without it, why do I suddenly need it now?

Do you wanna bet? I will match any amount you want to put up and I will give you my IP address. You crack in and you win. You don't get in and I win.
