Running Windows 7 here. Didn't force me to update to 8.1! 😁

I'm on Windows 7 and will wait for Windows 10 before upgrading.

The odd numbers seem to work better...wait for Windows 11.

That's because you have a different OS. If you had 8, you would now be on 8.1

If you follow the history of windows, 10 should be the polished version of 8. So that would be a safe bet

Windows 11 will probably be something totally different. A whole new OS for the Windows 7 they will stop supporting

Remember Pete, you won the PC but THEY own Windows (all versions) you don't. You are supposed to have control of apps and upgrades but they own the distro and modify it as they see fit.
I understand your frustrations but little to do about it.
I am running 8 PC's at this time, 5 desktops, two portables (one new with 8.1) plus a tablet, actually a 7" PHABLET because it's also a cell phone.
I also have 2 other PC's, one running 2003 Server and the other running Ubuntu.
My primary personal computer is running Win 7, an 8 core AMD powerhouse.
My main objection with Microsoft is every time they introduce a new O/S I can't find the things I need for maintenance, I think they hire a couple of guys at MS simply to hide crap where you can't find it. 8.1 on my new laptop I didn't like until I installed the Windows 7 shell, that helped me at least find the operating files I need for maintenance. In all honesty, I don't see a hill of beans difference between 8 and 8.1, in reality they are the same O/S but different structure and 8.1 with the shell is easy to operate.

They want you to upgrade mostly for security reasons. Might as well embrace it - they're all on the same page in this regard.

I must say, Window 8.1 works very well on my Surface Pro 3.

re maintenance have you considered a third part utility. I use that provided by Glarysoft, just upgraded XP to 7 (new computer) works fine on it

Pro version costs but private version free
