Default Macbook driver issue

Suddenly a few days ago I've been getting a black screen on my 2007 Macbook. I've discovered a work around which is this...

On boot, the desktop flashes up brightly and is replaced quickly by a black screen.

I press F1 multiple times then F2 to bring the brightness up.
If I press F2 more than a few times, the screen goes black again.

I can see on the black screen that the laptop is working - the image is there - just very dark.

This is clearly a driver issue as I'm using my Macbook now with a dimmer than normal screen due to my not risking bringing the brightness up too far.

Anybody know how to fix the driver?

You sure it is the driver and not the display going wonky?

There's enough evidence to indicate a software issue over hardware but power seems to play a part too so I just ordered a $20 knock off battery to try with it since the existing battery has 1500 recharge cycles and is 7 years old.

YAY...

The knock-off $20 battery worked. The old battery with 1,500 charge cycles was so dead it was causing problems.

I'm now a happy bunny again.
