Default USB Ports Renamed

My computer has renamed my "I" usb port as "F." I keep my photo files on a portable hard drive attached to what used to be the I port. I don't want to relink all of my Lightroom photos to the F port. How do I re-designate my I port?

Can anyone help?

I hope you're keeping that portable drive backed up.

You can rename a drive but I'd've never heard of renaming a USB port. Right click my computer and select manage, then rename it to any letter that's available.

What version of Windows are you using?
What you are referring to is that the Drive Letter changed. USB ports themselves do not get designated letters.

Windows will change the Drive Letter of a device if it has been unplugged and something else plugged in its place. In other words, Windows re-associates its drive letter.

If another removable drive is using the specific letter you want, unplug it first. Then you can reassign the drive letter using Disk Management.

What Gtwhtgt said basically:
Be logged in as an Administrator, then...
For Vista/7
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Type diskmgmt.msc into the search bar.
On the little pop up that opens, select diskmgmt.msc from the list.
3. Look for the Drive that you want to change and Right Click in that field.
Click on Change Drive Letter and Paths.
4. In the new window that opens, click once to highlight the drive letter and click the Change button.
5. In the new window, you can assign whatever drive letter is available form the drop down list. If the letter you want is not listed, another drive is currently using it.

Hope it helps

OK so the info I wrote applies to Vista.
Were you having trouble following it?
If so, let me know if I can help further.

I backup on an external hard drive and two DVDs that are stored separately.
