I'm not sure what the most expensive computer I've bought is - perhaps high spec Dell 17" laptop about 5 years ago for $1500. I generally build my computers (or buy them premade when I buy them at such a low cost that I couldn't build it for the price).

My last computer is a i7-3770k 16GB machine with to SSD drives and another 1tb drive. It dual boots OSX and Windows7. I built it in Sept 2012 for about $1200. If I didn't care about dual booting (and wanting a separate SSD drive for both OS), I could have brought the price down to about $1050. Prices have obviously continued to fall since then.

I agree with Jerry that you should be able to buy/build an absolutely screaming machine for about $1000 right now.

$135,000.

2007 International 9900 Truck. Of course, it had 10 wheels and an air seat. I was told that the computer processor was $5,000 to replace it, but the rest of it would not run if it was not plugged in.

And Air conditioning.....it had Air, and coffee cup holders.

I owned a IBM PC RT, new was around $25k but of course I didn't pay anything for it.

Most expensive I paid for was $2850 about 25 years ago, since then I have built my own for much less.

In 1971 my company bought an H.P. computer with the software for bookeeping purposes and also some engineering data. We paid $42,000. USD for a PC that would do about 1/4 of what my personal computer does today, a 6 core AMD with 8 gb ram and a 500 mb HD that I built myself for about $600. including the case I modified for high ambient temp. here in the tropics.

Well I just built a desktop which is about the best you can get for $1500. I probably sprint that amount on a laptop or two in years past. Since I've had one since the late 90's. it has a i7 processor, liquid cooling, BluRay optical, 16 gb ram, it is lacking in the HDD department with onlt a 1tb and 2tb drive in it right now soon I hope Togo to 4 2tb so I can run a raid drive on it. The video card ran me close to $500 its a evga 4gb 680 iirc. It has three Acer 24" monitors coming off that video card alone. I can hook up another couple to the motherboard .

My laptop I just got is a hp envy dv-7 with i7 CPU, 8gb ram soon will be 16, it has 1tb HDD soon that will be two 1tb hdds 17" display

So right now I'm det for computers not to mention an old toss a laptop and a Mac mini I have.

It all adds up

The first Mac we bought for the graphic design side of our studio had a 19" tube monitor, a 20 gb hard drive, an external jazz drive and 1 meg of ram with a BW printer cost about $8,000.

Computers today are cheap.
