Default When will PC monitors see Retina-class pixel density?

Phones, tablets, and Macbooks have been pushing pixel densities to new levels. Mainstream LCD monitors haven't joined in that trend (as far as I'm aware). I assume it's just a matter of time. Both my phone (Samsung) and my iPod touch are designs that were released over 2 years ago - pixels on those displays are nearly imperceptible. I really like the idea of having a 24" monitor with that kind of pixel density!

My current monitors screens are about 20" wide (24" diagonal) with a horizontal resolution of 1920. To match the resolution of my iPod touch 4G (960 pixels in 3") the horizontal screen resolution would be on the order of 6400 pixels, of 6400x4000 pixels - hadn't actually figured that up before, but that's a 25.6MP display!

Any industry insiders out there with insight on when we might see the next big step in desktop monitors?

The question is;"will it matter"? I too am on a 24" 1920x1200 screen and I don't think it would benefit from higher resolution. It's not like my old phone where I could see the pixels. So long as resolution is sufficient that the images look smooth, I think color control and rendition as well as gamut coverage are more important.

Besides, I like to do some work in Ps at 300-400% magnification. I'd imagine that on a higher resolution screen this would result in a smaller image, making those fine adjustments more difficult. It may also outpace my camera

I wouldn't worry.

I'm a professional photographer and I shoot lots of work commercially that ends up in magazines, prints, adverts and on the web and even as TV adverts.

I have a 30" 2560 x 1600

I'm not the only professional photographer doing this and working like this. And it all works fine and looks great. My work is seen on 'retina' displays and no one has ever made any comments that it looks awful far from it.

So don't get caught up in technology for technologies sake.

Paul.
