Default Computer memory limit

Why when you buy computer with 8 mgs of ram , and then you find out
that's all the machine will handle ? So what prevents you from adding more
or is there specific reason you can not add more memory:

A 32 bits OS is limited to 4Gb ram, a 64 bits OS can handle much, much more than 8 Gb, so I'm afraid it's the motherboard which does not allow to add more. Maybe to keep the price of the PC down?

You are maxed out my friend you cannot go higher then 8gb of ram.
What prevents you from not adding more well
have a look at this diagram you will see that there is 4 banks of memory

2x4=8gb of ram so each bank has a memory dimm of 2GB if you fill all 4 banks you have 8gb
But your pc can also be configured as 2 banks loaded with a 4gb memory dimm resulting in 8gb but then two of the slots are open.
However if you added more memory it simply would not recognize it because on your motherboard there is a limitation of how much it can handle.

There are other mother boards out there that support higher memory 16gb 32gb etc..
Heck there's servers now with 128gb of ram and higher.
