I tossed the W8 consumer preview on my old laptop (Lenovo T61p with T9300 CPU, 6GB, 256GB SSD). I'm still getting used to the UI, and being a preview it isn't quite fully cooked, but overall I'm pretty impressed with it for laptop service. Sstartup and shutdown are real quick and overall responsiveness is great. Battery life also seems significantly better. Nothing quantitative ... just my impression.

I'm thinking I might buy the official release for the laptop. I'll be keeping W7 on the desktop.

I'm replying to this from an iPad, but these sorts of devices do not compete with the more traditional desktop/laptop operating systems. These "touch" devices are great for consuming information, but still just don't have it for actually processing information.
+1

i'll stay put too , my machines have recenatly got fresh installs one of Win7 HP 64 bit and the two laptops xp (one professional (HP) and the other home xp 32bit)

i think it is allready too late for MS to jump on the train
Surface is way to expensive compaired to apple , samsung and sony

and i think they made a wrong deal with the all most dead nokia on windows phones

I will be sticking to win7 and awaiting the next version after 8 to me win8 seems like
when it was win 98se to window ME we all know how that went crashed and burned.
And then the big jump ended up being WinXP which burried win me

Win8 seems ok for tablets and interactive screens like those large displays you see at expo's or mall directory screens.

Funny thing is why is it when you have a new os it seems faster and then 2yrs later the same os even after reghosting just doesn't seem as speedy
as in comparison when you first installed it on the same pc.
I swear there's something embedded in code to slow it down for you to upgrade your equipment. I know I can't be the only one to notice this.

I'm interested in what people think about the new Imac as a photo editing computer using Photoshop. Maybe it's too early to think anything since I dont believe the units are shipping yet but maybe there are some thoughts based on the published specs. My other prob is that I am using PS CS on an old homebuilt PC right now and dont want to spend another $900 or so to get the lated PS version for Imac. If I go Mac are there other--cheaper--editing solutions for the Mac system?

I can't imagine how this release of Windows will not be a major flop a la Windows Vista. The idea of a hybrid operating system seems odd to me.

I'm sick of being a Beta tester for Microsoft's new releases.

I'm sticking with Windows 7, I'm really happy with it.
