Thanks MS. Do you mean by root the directory "photos" in Rense's example (d:\photos).

By root, I mean "d:\".* you can put as many files and directories as you need within d:\photos.

Thanks Richard. So it's ok to create many sub-directories under d:\photos. Is that correct.

Edit: Counted and have 10 directories under G:\ Is that OK and can I create more.

aam1234,
Richard is correct, in case your filesystem is formatted as FAT16 or FAT32. You can make as many subdirectories as you want below g:\photos in such a system.
I think the limit was 255 directories below g:\ for FAt16/FAT32.
If your filesystem is formatted as NTFS, none of the restrictions apply.

Here are a couple of good articles.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/120138 <-description of FAT16
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154997/EN-US/* <-description of FAT32

It looks like the practical limitations was limited to FAT16 and FAT12.* And looks like my root habits are a hold over from the FAT16 days. *

Still I don't like to see a messy root on any type of file system in general.
