My rule of thumb is that I wait to update my machine until I can make an affordable 4x jump in speed. You're a little over 2x my i5 760 in CPU, but I don't overclock. My graphics card is an 8800GTX I picked up for $50 - I'd have to spend a couple hundred to top it. I am at 16GB and have needed more than 8 on several occasions working with big stuff.

Looks like you got a nice rig there. I've never messed with water cooling. I build quiet machines, but just use big speed-controlled fans to keep the noise down. My GPU is the noisiest part of my system. It replaced a fanless card.

If it is any consolation Seawolf66, my machine is a Core 2 Duo at 2.66 GHz, but boosted with the OS (Windows 7) on a Cosair SSD, it gives adequate performance in general. My issue is that the MoBo (ASUS PK5-VM) supports only 8GB of DDR2 RAM and that limps along when dealing with the huge D800 RAW captures. I wonder if a Core i3 plus DDR3 16GB upgrade will solve my woes.

Suggestions welcome. Thanks!

Very nice rig! I just built myself a new one a couple of months ago. I went from a quad core CPU with 8GB of RAM to an eight core CPU with 16GB of RAM, liquid cooling, and an EVGA GTX 570 HD video card (this thing is huge). I do a lot of HD video editing and this thing flies through encoding like a hot knife through butter.

And here I sit feeling jealous with my 17" Asus laptop, 3rd Gen i7 Quad Core 3610QM@2.30ghz, 16gb RAM, nVidia Geforce GTX 660m - 2gb video card. The fan system on this thing is huge, adds nearly 2 inches to the overall dimensions, but it stays cool no matter what I'm doing with it. For a laptop, this is damned nice, but it isn't a full tower race horse.
