Default IT mystery

An army of IT professionals couldn't solve this mystery (ok, a small army ), so let's see if the gurus in the Camel can give it a go.

Executive summary: When installing most/many programs I get this error message...hresult: 0x80073712

Not-so-executive summary: After a format and fresh instillation of Win 7 64bit I was able to install a lot of software but not all. Funny thing is, Microsoft programs are the ones that are not working (plus ACDSee). Still get the same error message (hresult: 0x80073712)

Other things I've done:
- Tried Run As Administrator
- Cleaned the registry
- Ran memory check
- Lowered the security level in UAC

Anybody here is curious enough to try and solve this mystery

Were you upgrading? Installing new software? Is the software compatible with 64bit?
Any other errors?

- It's a brand new and self-assembled PC (not by me but by an IT person).
- Yes, new software, and except for ACDSee, they are 64-bit versions.
- Luckily, no other errors.

In the first go (before the re-installation of Win 7), there was no anti-virus installed. However, after starting anew, MS Security Essentials was/is running.

Run CMD as Administrator and execute the following.

SFC /SCANNOW

Restart your pc, if it is required.

Detailed instructions if you want them.

Make sure your time and date are correct for the system.
You receive error code "0x80073712" or the "Windows Features" dialog box is empty when you try to install updates or components in Windows 7 or in Windows Vista

Cheers, gryphonslair99.

moonshadow, funny enough, the date in the PC was a day off. Hmmm.

You may/will also receive this error if you are installing a combined iTunes/QuickTime from Apple. The workaround (which worked for me) was to 'extract' the .msi from within the exe. I used 7Zip to extract the files to a temp folder and then from there I right clicked on the .msi and chose 'Run As Administrator'. After this I installed iTunes again and when the PC rebooted, iTunes updater updated both itself and quicktime.
