Default Computer question.

Can a desktop receive wifi? I see a router option but the computer isn't locating one. I know the router works because I'm using it now to make this thread on a netbook right now.

Sure, a desktop can receive wifi so long as you have a wifi card installed, like this one. If you have a commercial desktop (i.e., one you didn't build yourself) that was supposed to come with a wifi card, then make sure you have the wifi drivers installed. If you're going to buy a wifi card, be sure you get one that supports 802.11n, since that standard, now ratified, is much faster than older "b" and "g" standards.

Everyone is right on this one. A wi-fi card would be probably faster than a USB stick. It was reccommended to me to wire the desktop to the wireless router, if that's even a possibility for you, because the wire speed is faster than the wireless speed. I understand when there are multiple desktops far away from the router that running CAT5 wire might not be sensable.

I've used my desktop both as a wired and a WiFi unit to my router (not at the same time). It makes no sense to use WiFi if you can hardwire instead. The speed differences are quite noticeable.

I agree, however with the living situation now (in between moving) I have to Wifi my desktop until we buy a house.

I got a Belkin "Surf and Share" with 300MBPS. It's working quick enough to make me happy for now.

Thanks for the advice all.

You have to have either a wifi card fitted or an usb dongle fitted, go for an usb dongle if computers are not your thing or want less complicated things in life
