Default How to ID a counterfeit CF card

I bought an 8GB "Sandisk Extreme IV" CF card online - less than half the price Roberts' was asking. It shipped direct from China, and (surprise!) it is not a legit Sandisk card. I knew that was a possibility when ordering, but the seller had pretty good reviews.

I've filed a gripe with Paypal - don't know how that's going to turn out. I'm not going to return the card unless the seller covers return shipping (yeah, right) - so I may end up stuck with it.

It's not a dog of a card. It's a little slower than my Extreme III card - so it might be 133x or 150x, and it is, in fact, 8GB. Just wondering if there is any software tools that will interrogate a CF card and expose its true identity.

Don't know of software, but you may not want to know. You may find that it actually is a legit one underneath the covers. It probably failed a QA test on speed so got kickedvack to a lesser grade.

I don't think so. I have legit SanDisk cards, and there are too many minor differences in the covers, molding, etc. I sent photos to SanDisk support and they said the number on the card is not a legit SanDisk number.
The card on the left is the fake X IV- the one on the right is real X III.

Hope that this will help you:

<< With any type of reader, you will also see some identifying information for CompactFlash in the file setupapi.log in the WINDOWS directory on the C: drive of a typical Windows XP installation. Here's an example setupapi.log entry for a CompactFlash card that uses Toshiba components:

#I124 Doing copy-only install of "USBSTOR\DISK&VEN_TOSHIBA&PROD_THNCF1G02CA&REV_3.0 0\1B03010305F416A9&0". >>

Hmmm - W7 here - found a file called "setupapi.dev.log" and found an entry that from the day I would have first stuck it in my USB reader (on an Epson printer) - but don't see brand-specific info. I have another machine here running XP - might try it in that one to see if the file stores some different info.

Seems like a good starting point. Thanks.

Ebay used to have an entire page dedicated to how to identify fake CF cards (probably still there) including images of real and fake cards and their packaging.

Edit: http://reviews.ebay.com/F?ugid=10000000001456539

Yep - the information on that page is what led me to believe the card was fake. Sandisk support confirmed it. Now I'm just trying to figure out what I actually have - if that's possible.

Interesting...

The batch number on your fake card is exactly the same as on my fake card!
