Default Canon G12 photo

Here's a photo that I took today using the Canon G12, a higher end P&S camera that I acquired some months ago from a local Goodwill thrift store: There is no after shot processing - just the jpeg image straight from the camera - nothing fancy.

Nice soft color. I had a G12. Unfortunately it was stolen. Good camera. Enjoy.

A nice shot. I still have my second G12.
The first one met its end by falling into the ocean.

Compact cameras do well with macro. Still have my G10 that I bought new in '08. These days I mostly use it for shooting photos for Craiglist ads.

What is it about compact cameras that makes you say they do well with macro?

Please do not misunderstand me. I totally agree with your statement. I just want to know how you came to that conclusion.

I think it has to do with the rear lens element being in such extremely close proximity to the sensor.

I had been using my dSLR with macro lenses for most of my macro/close-up work. However, my Canon G11 compact camera has gradually replaced it. Here are some of the reasons:

1. Depth-of-Field -- the compact produces great DOF. For example, to duplicate the DOF I get with the compact at f/8, I would have to stop my dSLR macro lens beyond its f/32 maximum.

2. Articulated LCD -- makes it so easy to adjust for easy composition and framing. For example, the articulated LCD allows me to capture ground-level close-ups without getting down on my hands and knees.

3. Image Quality -- in spite of its small sensor size, the compact IQ is quite high.

4. Close focus -- can easily fill the frame with a 7cm object.

5. Live View -- after a short period of time (30-seconds), my dSLR turns the live view off to avoid overheating. My compact has no such limitation.

6. Moving Auto Focus Frame -- this feature allows me to critically focus without moving the camera from its desired position.

My daughter has my G12. Gave it to her when I bought a G1X MkII. Both of us are happy.
Almost forgot my remark. I love unprocessed images that are good straight from the camera.
