Default Commercial Photography/Advertising Photography/Product Illustration...

We have created this new forum for display, discussion and critique of all things related to creating images for use in marketing and promotion of goods and services.

That's the acid test for posts on this forum:
—is it about illustrating goods and services for use in the commercial marketplace?

If it is, you're in the right place. Post your images, ask your questions and describe your techniques on the business of getting from that little spark in the AD's head to the finished image in print or on the web.

This forum is for professionals and aspiring professionals alike... or just photographers interested in knowing how commercial images are made. There is no skill level or experience requirement. I do ask that old hands be patient and helpful with less experienced photographers and for those wishing to learn about the business to please respect the tried and true opinions of working photographers.

All interaction is expected to be at the very least cordial and respectful... that goes double for disagreements. Disagree all you want but keep the discussion on track and positive. Humor is always welcome and the preferred way to blow off steam. The idea is to always produce something better than we started with or pocket new tools and ideas for future projects.

I'll be updating this post as we go with guidelines and ideas. Please contact me via PM if you have ideas to make this forum more valuable.

Invite your colleagues and friends to join the Camel and participate!

That's all for the moment.

Thanks,
Chip

Nice idea! But! How does this forum differ from the commercial photography forum? Every commercial shot that I have ever made or assignment I have ever taken on was for some kind of advertising; sell sheets, flyers, catalogs, point of purchase displays, menu boards, food and product packaging, and advertisements in magazines, newspapers and even TV commercials. Even certain kinds of architectural photography, landscape work and corporate portraiture come into the domain of the commercial photographer.

The only differential I can see between what is known as “commercial illustration” and straightforward “commercial” work is that in the case of product shots there are straightforward “portrait like” images of the product alone whereas in the “illustrations” the product is shown in use, usually with models in the image” or showing a lifestyles theme.

What about fashion illustration- we already have a fashion forum but that too oftentimes is done by a commercial photographer. Unless you are talking about large urban metropolitan areas and cities where there are many sub-specialists in the commercial field- places like New York, LA, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal, Rome or Paris; the resident commercial guy or gal has to offer many services- like a general practitioner rather than a specialist.

Is this not redundant?

What do you think? Ed

I also thought that was already covered in Commercial.

Hi again! All of theses are images which have been made through the commercial end of my business! How would you categorize them! Everyone was used for institutional, display and publication advertising. All of them were SELLING products, services and professional services . How do the differ? Is it all a matter of semantics.

I may be totally out of the loop here so HELP me out!

Ed

Ed you are the only mod for this board so unless you want this thread as a sticky you are the only one who can unstick it.

I know I can un-stick it but I still don't understand where it came form. Is it from one of the new admins? Doesn't one need to me a moderator to stick it in the first place? The OP never responded to my remarks. I don't want to show any disrespect by just letting it go- just yet!

I will contact the OP and then see what his expectations are.

Thanks for reminding me- I appreciate it!

Ed
