Smile Lens--Need Advice

There is this lens on the market for Canon:
Sigma 28-70mm F2.8-4

How does this lens compare to the stock lens EFS-18-55mm f/3.5-5.6?

I know the Sigma does not have the Stabilization feature, thus no S in the description, but as far as the 2.8-4 compared to the 3.5-5.6, is it worth the time and money to invest in this lens?

Yeah, what she said !
I am actually looking at the sigma 17-70 2.8 so I am also interested in the replies for the 28-70 2.8 as well. Already have the Sigma 70-200 2.8 and love it.

I have not used the Sigma so I cannot assist in that regard.

However, there may be some fundamental misunderstandings in your original post.

This EF-S lens does not have stabilization feature which is usually denoted by "IS". EF-S line is for 1.6x DSLR such as 400D, 30D etc.

Further, translates (loosely) into full frame context, 28mm is really more a "standard lens" as a 45mm equivalent focal length whereas the 18mm is more a standard wide angle as 29mm equivalent.

The two lenses are not quite comparable in terms of usage.

Hope it helps.

Cheers

I'm TOTALLY confused by that comment!!!! LOL

Now, in lay terms, would I benefit from the differences between the two lenses, and exactly how will the same shot print out from each lens?

Here's a more straightforward version:

NEITHER this Sigma NOR Canon has image stabilization feature.

This Canon is much wider than the Sigma and the Sigma has more reach than the Canon.

The Sigma is brighter than the Canon.

Hope it helps!

I'm going to take some test shots with both lenses of the same subject, etc, and see what I come up with. I haven't had the chance to test the lens out, was just wondering if someone could tell me (in lay terms!!!) what I could expect to see in similar shots with each lens.
I'll let you know what I come up with!

...examining your own test shots is the best way to see the differences:

Sigma 28-70 is less wide and longer, Canon 18-55 is wider and shorter in it's reach.

The Sigma is brighter, but from what I know soft wide open, needs at least one stop to overcome this (so shoot it as an F4.0-F5.6 lens...)

The Sigma should be of considerably better build...

...*my* 0.02 worth...

Kindest regards!
