Default 1D Mark III magenta cast?

Every 1D (not S) camera I've used from Canon--and I've used them all--has had color cast issues, especially with jpegs. So I downloaded the 1D Mark III portrait sample that Canon provides on this site:

Canon EOS-1D Mark III - Sample Images

and pulled up the portrait in Photoshop on my calibrated system. Sure enough, I noticed a reddish/magenta color cast right away. I fixed the skin tone with an adjuster that I have and present the "before" and "after" shots below.

Although one does not have to rely upon jpeg, I feel that in a camera that costs $4500, Canon ought to provide jpeg versions that are better than this.

I should note that the 1D Mark IIN has fewer color cast issues than any other 1D camera from Canon I've had my hands on. The company must have tweaked the jpeg conversion algorithms on the N. I'm just surprised if those tweaks did not make it into the III.

So you have compared images from the camera to the actual subject and there really is a noticeable color cast? Just wondering, because from an image like they posted, without seeing the model in person, it is a subjective call as to what is "better" or "truer".

Correct?

I agree your modification "looks" better, but is it more accurate?

This is a good point. Without full control over the entire workflow, from lighting setup to final presentation image, it's difficult to identify where a discrepancy may have been introduced...or if it was intentional as part of the set.

Personally, I don't see how any web-sized jpeg could show the capability of most digital cameras today. Too many compromises when getting the finished image out to the web.

PhotoTune SkinTune 2.0.

And then with some smoothing it looks even better, I think.

But then it's no longer relevant to the 1DMkIII's performance, wouldn't you say?

Got to agree with Brian on that. No camera will produce images that appear identical to every human eye that sees it.....Bob

...have to look into that software someday tks for sharing

...but ahhh... you did a tad too: IMHO, you made her too plasticky...

...well, tastes differ

Anyway, when you should feel like it, you can now tune your camera's colourcast in advance through the new PictureStyleEditor software, take out as much magenta as you like from a style, reload it in camera, and voilà: JPEG's à la Carte, JD-Arte

...*my* €0.02...

My kindest regards and respects,

Indeed the softening is not to everyone's taste. But I do see the magenta cast that has plagued other Canon camera models.
