You can get a terrabyte external drive for around $100
Reliable, redundant storage will run significantly higher. My server grade drives and disk array gives me 1.2 TB of redundant storage for approximately $450. Off site storage is currently free, for now, but is another piece of the puzzle in any continuity plan.

Yeah, but the main difference between consumer and server drives is speed. I'd love to have a pair of 15K drives stipped together, but it works in a pinch.

I know all hard drives will eventually fail - and the same really goes for home burned optical media. Still, I've had plenty of problems with DVDs and CDs over enough time, but never - knock on wood - with a hard drive. I think redundancy is really the key, though. And prioritizing your stuff; friends, family, my web server, and the bank's safe deposit box have copies of my 6 GB or so of portfolio pieces.

I disagree, the main difference is reliability and quality of internals. There were equivalent drives in regards to speed, but were less expensive.
