Default Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro or...

I currently have this lens. I'm sort of looking at upgrading my gear bit by bit and I wasn't sure if this one needed an upgrade.

According to Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX macro DG - Photozone Test Report / Review, this lens seems equal to, or better in some cases, than the Canon 100 macro and the Tamron 90 macro.

I use it for macro and portrait. The only thing I'm not crazy about is it's sometimes slow to focus.

Is there actually a better macro lens in this range or should I be happy with it and mark it off in the Keeper checklist?

Keep it if you like it. I have the Canon version, and it's pretty slow to focus as well. It's just as well anyway, I generally MF for macro and portrait.

Glad you said that. I was thinking maybe the Canon had lightning fast AF. If it doesn't, I'm keeping what I have till it pukes. I actually bought it used from someone and Sigma rechipped it for free to work on my 30D.

If by "lightning fast," you mean Wuuuuuuuump-dink. It isn't the slowest focusing lens, but not as fast as others in my bag. I really can't remember how fast the Sigma was that I tried, so I regrettably can't comment on which was faster. I chose the Canon based on it's bokeh.

I love my Sigma 105. Sharp and as jfrancho stated, I tend to go with manual focus under those conditions especially macro.

Hi waple,

keep the Sigma, & mark it 'keeper'.

The Canon 100F2.8 Macro USM auto-focuses just as slow, only silent (USM motor).

The reason I went with the Canon 100F2.8 Macro USM is that I could buy it second hand with the hood and the tripod collar (and an UV filter IIRC ) for less than the Sigma was new

And I agree with the others: AF speed is not that important, Macro is ManualFocus, almost all the time, except when hunting flying bugs in the garden

...*my* €0.02 worth...

Kindest regards!

Ditto with my own Sigma 105/2.8 macro.
